Acts 1:8

Acts 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

1. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you…”

a. It is critical that we see that Jesus told his disciples they were to be witnesses for him to all the world, but before they left Jerusalem they had to be filled with the Holy Ghost. If Jesus did not begin his ministry until after he was filled with the Holy Ghost, then we must not either.

b. Jesus did not do any miracles until after being filled with the Holy Ghost.

2. “…and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

a. The words of Jesus tell us that it was not going to be a quick task. Looking at some of the parables of Jesus it reveals that the evangelization of the earth to be an age long process.

1). Luke 19:11-27 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.
And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, [thou] wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?
And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

Acts 1:7

Acts 1:7

And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

1. “…It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.”

a. Amplified Bible: “He said unto them, It is not for you to become acquainted with and know what time brings --the things and events of time and their definite periods fixed years and seasons (their critical nick of time), which the Father has appointed (fixed and reserved) by His own choice and authority and personal power.”

b. In light of the next verse I can not help but think he was trying to get their hearts to focus on what their most important task was, to win the world to Him, and not be carried away with times and seasons concerning the glorious kingdom of Israel.

c. Yet, decades later when the Apostle Paul was writing of the coming of Christ he wrote that the church was not to be in darkness concerning that day.

1). 1 Thessalonians 5:1-5 “But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.”

d. Nevertheless, our most important task is to fulfill the great Commission.

1). Matthew 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Acts 1:6

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

1. “…Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?”

a. This is a question not only about Israel being restored to her glory, but also about the promises mentioned in the Prophets and Psalms concerning Israel being the most glorious nation on earth.

b. We must not miss the lesson here for it is vitally important. It seems they were preoccupied with the end and Jesus deflected it and caused them to focus on what the mission of the church was and is. Wait to be baptized in the Holy Ghost and then fulfill the great commission!

c. I love studying about the end times as much as anyone, but we must be preoccupied with winning the lost. This is our most important task.

Acts 1:4

Acts 1:4

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

a. NLT: Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before.

b. NIV: On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

1). The disciples were commanded not to leave Jerusalem until they were filled with the Holy Ghost. They were not to start their ministry until they were filled with the Holy Ghost. Jesus himself did not begin his ministry until after he was filled with the Holy Ghost. Jesus during his ministry did not operate as God even though he was God, he ministered as a man filled with the Holy Ghost.

a). Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

b). Luke 4:16-21 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
4:17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
4:19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
4:20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
4:21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

3). Jesus emptied himself of his abilities as God, i.e., His omipotentence, omniscience, omnipresence.

a). Philippians 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

b). made…of no reputation (2758 * keno) to empty, make empty. (Romans 4:14, “make void”; 1 Corinthians 1:17, “make of none effect”; 1 Corinthians 9:15, “make void”; 2 Corinthians 9:3, “be in vain”.)

c). Amplified Bible: “But stripped Himself of all privileges and rightful dignity…”

d). When Jesus became a man He made Himself of none effect as far as the characteristics of Deity are concerned.

3. “…which, saith he, ye have heard of me.”

a. which [3739 * hos] [Strong: including feminine he hay, and neuter ho ho probably a primary word (or perhaps a form of the article 3588); the relatively (sometimes demonstrative) pronoun, who, which, what, that:--one, (an-, the) other, some, that, what, which, who(-m, -se), etc.]

b. ye have heard [191 * akouo] [Strong: a primary verb; to hear (in various senses):--give (in the) audience (of), come (to the ears), (shall) hear(-er, -ken), be noised, be reported, understand.]

c. of me [3450 * mou] [Strong: the simpler form of 1700; of me:--I, me, mine (own), my.]

1). Jesus on more than a few times referred to the Holy Ghost as the “promise” of the Father.

a). John 14:15-17 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

b). Acts 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Acts 6:10

Acts 6:10

And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

a. resist [436 * anthistemi] [Zodhiates: To stand against, in deed or word.]

b. Jesus foretold that his followers could and would experience these things.

1). Luke 21:12-15 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.
And it shall turn to you for a testimony.
Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:
For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

b. We can see this same thing in the life of Jesus Christ in the ability the Holy Ghost gave him to outsmart his enemies.

1). Matthew 22:15-46 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
And last of all the woman died also.
Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him and saying,
Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Acts 6:8

Acts 6:8

And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

1. “And Stephen, full of faith and power…”

a. faith[4102 * pistis] [Zodhiates: faith].
a.    NIV “Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power…
b.    The differences are because of the manuscripts used. The manuscript used in the KJV says “faith”, while the manuscript used in the NIV says “grace”. I choose to follow the KJV.
c.     I do so because it takes faith to operate in the supernatural. Even though it is the Holy Ghost doing the works, it takes faith to co-labor with him. This is revealed in the gospel of Matthew.
1). Matthew 17:14-21 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
d.    Scripture says in Romans 10:17, “So then faith cometh be hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
1). Stephen was full of faith because he was full of the word of God. This is shown very clearly in his preaching in chapter 7. Stephen knew the word of God.
e. Stephen was full of power because he was full of the Holy Ghost. When they were choosing out men to take care of the ministry to widows this was one of the qualifications mentioned.
1). Acts 6:3 “Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.”
2. “…did great wonders and miracles among the people.”

a. Jesus said we would do greater works than he did.

1). John 14:12-14 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to my Father.
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”

Acts 14:3



Acts 14:3

Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

a. NLT: But the apostles stayed there a long time, preaching boldly about the grace of the Lord. And the Lord proved their message was true by giving them power to do miraculous signs and wonders.

b. NIV: So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.

c. YLT: long time, indeed, therefore, did they abide speaking boldly in the Lord, who is testifying to the word of His grace, and granting signs and wonders to come to pass through their hands.

d. Amplified Bible Classic: So [Paul and Barnabas] stayed on there for a long time, speaking freely and fearlessly and boldly in the Lord, Who continued to bear testimony to the Word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be performed by their hands.

e. Worrell Translation: A long time, therefore, they tarried there, speaking boldly in the Lord, Who testified to the word of His grace, by granting signs and wonders to be done through their hands.

1. “Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord…”

a. long [Strong: 2425 * hikanos hik-an-os' from hiko (hikano or hikneomai, akin to 2240) (to arrive); competent (as if coming in season), i.e. ample (in amount) or fit (in character):--able, + content, enough, good, great, large, long (while), many, meet, much, security, sore, sufficient, worthy.]

i. Lord [2962 * kurios koo'-ree-os from kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun) controller; by implication, Master (as a respectful title):-- God, Lord, master, Sir.]

1). Paul asked the church at Ephesus to pray for him to preach boldly.

a). Ephesians 6:18-20 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,
For which I am an ambassador in bonds; that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

2). Paul wrote that the gospel was the power of God unto salvation.

a). Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

b). salvation [4991 * solteria] [Zodhiates: Safety, deliverance, preservation from danger.] [Scofield: The Hebrew and Greek words for salvation imply the ideas of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing and soundness. 2. “…which gave testimony unto the word of his grace,

1). In a court of law if I testify, I am giving my side of the story, I am supporting or contradicting what someone else has said. In this verse it says that God was giving testimony concerning what Paul and Barnabas were speaking boldly about the word of his grace.

c. to [Strong: to from 3588 * ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; the definite article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, etc.]

1). In the salvation of Christ we have an inheritance, an inheritance of deliverance, healing, soundness, preservation, and safety. It is only by hungering and thirsting, eating and drinking of the word of his grace and allowing him to build us up in faith that we will receive the inheritance. Concerning the “word of his grace” Paul said something very powerful to the elders of Ephesus in the book of Acts.

a). Acts 20:32 And now brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

c. signs [Strong: 4592 * semeion say-mi'-on neuter of a presumed derivative of the base of 4591; an indication, especially ceremonially or supernaturally:--miracle, sign, token, wonder.]

i. hands [Strong: 5495 * cheir khire perhaps from the base of 5494 in the sense of its congener the base of 5490 (through the idea of hollowness for grasping); the hand (literally or figuratively (power); especially (by Hebraism) a means or instrument):--hand.]

1). As previously stated, God’s testimony concerning what Paul and Barnabas were preaching was “…granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.” This is further established by a verse in the gospel of Mark.

a). Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.  

2). It is also established by verses in Hebrew and 1 Peter.

a). Hebrews 2:1-4 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
2:2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

(1) Notice carefully in verses 2 & 3 that signs, wonders, miracles and gifts of the Holy Ghost are part of our “great salvation.”

b). 1 Peter 1:9-12 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
