Romans 6:13

Romans 6:13

Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

a. NLT: Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.

b. NIV: Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.

c. YLT: neither present ye your members instruments of unrighteousness to the sin, but present yourselves to God as living out of the dead, and your members instruments of righteousness to God;

d. Amplified Bible: Do not continue offering or yielding your bodily members [and faculties] to sin as instruments (tools) of wickedness. But offer and yield yourselves to God as though you have been raised from the dead to [perpetual] life, and your bodily members [and faculties] to God, presenting them as implements of righteousness.

e. Worrell Translation neither present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God, as alive from the dead, and your members to God as instruments of righteouseness.

1. “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin…”

1). This same Greek word is translated “present” in Romans 12:1.

b). Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey , his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

c). Whoever I am consistently obedient to, I am presenting myself as a sacrifice to them, as their weapon, and as their servant.


2). It is also translated “yield” in Romans 6:16.

3). In light of these Scriptures, to whom I yield my body in obedience to, I am presenting my body to as a weapon, as a sacrifice and as a servant.

1). We are not to yield or present our bodily members, eyes, hands, ears, feet, our minds to the devil as weapons to be used against the kingdom of God.

a). Romans 2:23, 24 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

Genesis 3:7

Genesis 3:7

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

1. “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew they were naked…”

a. The first thing they realized with their physical senses was they were naked. The glory and honour they were crowned with and covered with when they were created was gone, and they knew they were naked.

1). Psalm 8:3-8 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

b. Adam and Eve died spiritually. God had commanded and warned Adam what would happen if he ate of “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”, he warned that Adam would “surely die”.

1). Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.

2). Man became the servant of the devil.

a). Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 

3). Because man became the servant of the devil, man begins to walk according to the nature of his new master.

a). Ephesians 2:2,3 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

4). The “law of sin”, that Paul mentions in Romans 7: 23, that is, “the body of this death” Paul mentioned in Romans 7:24 is injected into mans spirit.

a). Romans 7:14-24 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

c. There was a huge transfer of possession and authority, because what Adam committed was spiritual high treason. This is seen clearly in the temptation of Jesus.

1). Matthew 4:8, 9 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

2). Luke 4:5, 6 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

a). The ability of Satan to give the kingdoms of this world to whoever he wanted was “delivered” to Satan by Adam at the fall.

b).  Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 

d. Satan became the god of this world.

1). 2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

2). Satan began to blind men and women’s minds by building strongholds, ungodly imaginations and thought processes against the knowledge of God.

a). 2 Corinthians 10:4, 5 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;  

3) Satan’s kingdom became established and operative in the earth through mans disobedience. Jesus spoke of Satan’s kingdom in Matthew 12:26 and Luke 11:18.

4). God’s kingdom became established and operative in the earth through mans (Jesus)
obedience.

Genesis 2:25

Genesis 2:25

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

1. Why were they not ashamed? Well they were created in the likeness and image of God. And they were clothed with something other than mere garments. While God is clothed with honour and majesty, man was created and crowned with glory and honour.

a. Psalm 104:1,2 “Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.
Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

b. Psalm 8:4-8 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

2. Our adorning should not be from the outward but from the inward. You know of course I’m not saying we shouldn’t wear clothes. What I’m saying is the inward man should be louder than what we are wearing.

a. 1 Peter 3:3-5 “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning or plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjective unto their own husbands:”

Isaiah 52:14

Isaiah 52:14

As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

a. NLT: But many were amazed when they saw him. His face was so disfigured he seemed hardly human, and from his appearance, one would scarcely know he was a man.

b. NIV: Just as there were many who were appalled at him, his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness.

c. Amplified Bible: [For many the Servant of God became an object of horror; many were astonished at Him.] His face and His whole appearance were marred more than any man’s, and His form beyond that of the sons of men—but just as many were astonished at Him,

d. Septuagint: As many shall be amazed at thee, so shall thy face be without glory from men, and thy glory [shall not be honoured] by the sons of men.

1). The following is a number of passages dealing with some of the physical torment Christ Jesus endured before the crucifixion at the hands of men.

50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

c). Matthew 27:26-28 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

27:29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

27:31And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

15:16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.
15:17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
15:18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
15:19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
15:20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

e). John 19:1-3 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
19:2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
19:3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

Flogging was a legal preliminary to every Roman execution, and only women and Roman senators or soldiers (except in cases of desertion) were exempt. The usual instrument was a short whip (flagellum) with several single or braided leather thongs of variable lengths, in which small iron balls or sharp pieces of sheep bones were tied at intervals) Occasionally, staves also were used. For scourging, the man was stripped of his clothing, and his hands were tied to an upright post. The back, buttocks, and legs were flogged either by two soldiers (lictors) or by one who alternated positions. The severity of the scourging depended on the disposition of the lictors and was intended to weaken the victim to a state just short of collapse or death.  After the scourging, the soldiers often taunted their victim.
Medical Aspects of Scourging: As the Roman soldiers repeatedly struck the victim's back with full force, the iron balls would cause deep contusions, and the leather thongs and sheep bones would cut into the skin and Subcutaneous tissues. Then, as the flogging continued, the lacerations would tear into the underlying skeletal muscles and produce quivering ribbons of bleeding flesh. Pain and blood loss generally set the stage for circulatory shock. The extent of blood loss may well have determined how long the victim would survive on the cross.
Scourging of Jesus: At the Praetorium, Jesus was severely whipped. (Although the severity of the scourging is not discussed in the four gospel accounts, it is implied in one of the epistles [1Peter 2:24]. A detailed word study of the ancient Greek text for this verse indicates that the scourging of Jesus was particularly harsh.) It is not known whether the number of lashes was limited to 39, in accordance with Jewish law. The Roman soldiers, amused that this weakened man had claimed to be a king, began to mock him by placing a robe on his shoulders, a crown of thorns on his head, and a wooden staff as a scepter in his right hand.1 Next, they spat on Jesus and struck him on the head with the wooden staff.1 Moreover, when the soldiers tore the robe from Jesus' back, they probably reopened the scourging wounds.  The severe scourging, with its intense pain and appreciable blood loss, most probably left Jesus in a pre-shock state. Moreover, hematidrosis had rendered his skin particularly tender. The physical and mental abuse meted out by the Jews and the Romans, as well as the lack of food, water, and sleep, also contributed to his generally weakened state. Therefore, even before the actual crucifixion, Jesus' physical condition was at least serious and possibly critical.

d. Because of the physical abuse he received at the hands of the Jews but more so the Romans his physical appearance was worse than anyone who had experienced that type of punishment. I believe that because Jesus had a perfect physical body, i.e. a body that had not experienced the ravages of the fall, his physical and mental and of course spiritual stamina was far superior, which in turn allowed him to receive and endure more physical punishment that any other man.

Leviticus 1:9

Leviticus 1:9

But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

1. “But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water…”

a. Here the duties switch to the one presenting the sacrifice. It is his responsibility to wash the inwards and the legs. This speaks to our obedience to the Scriptures.

b. The inwards:

1). 2 Corinthians 7:1 Having  therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

2). Hebrews 10:19-22 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the vail, that is to say, his lfesh;
And having a high priest over the house of God;
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

3). 1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit…”

c. The legs

1). Psalm 119:9 Where withal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed there to according to thy word.

2.  “…and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.”
a. Here again the duties for the job switch back to the priest. The priest then burns all the sacrifice on the altar. In a burnt offering there is nothing left.

b. As we present our bodies as living sacrifices to the Lord, we also will give off a sweet smelling savour.

1). 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
