Genesis 3:15

Genesis 3:15

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

1. “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman,

a. I believe this is a hint that Satan, because of this promise would strive to subvert women all over the world.

 2. “…and between thy seed and her seed…”

a. This is the first prophecy in the Bible of the redemption of man. The seed of the woman is a hint to the virgin birth because biologically the seed comes from the man and a male is not mentioned.

b. The seed of Satan is unregenerate man.

1). 1 John 3:10-12 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

2). As generations pass, spiritual death works in mankind and causes him to walk alienated from God.

a). Ephesians 4:17-19 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

c. The “seed” of the woman is referring to Christ. The genealogy listed in Luke, which is actually Mary’s, shows the linage from Adam down to Christ. It would be Christ who bruises and crushes the serpents head.

1). Luke 3:23-38 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,
Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,
Which was the son of Maath, which was the son] of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda,
Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri,
Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er,
Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi,
Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim,
Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,
Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson,
Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son] of Juda,
Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor,
Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala,
Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,
Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan,
Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

d. A reference that is continued in the Abrahamic Covenant .

1). Genesis 15:18 “In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land…”

d. The Apostle Paul writing in Galatians declares the seed was Christ.

1). Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

e. Paul also wrote that those who are in Christ through the New Birth are also the seed of Abraham.

1). Galatians 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

2. “…it shall bruise thy head, and thou shall bruise his heel.”

a. These words speak first of the total defeat of the devil by the Messiah Jesus bruising the head of Satan and secondly of the bruising Jesus endured during the trial and crucifixion and death.

Matthew 1:5

Matthew 1:5

And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

1. “And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab…”

a. This is a wonderful part of this genealogy. Here we find out that Boaz one of the main characters in the book of Ruth was the son of Rahab, that woman of great faith in Joshua, who contributed in the conquest of Jericho.

1). Joshua 2:1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

b. Not only that we also know that Boaz and Rahab were the Great Great Grandparents of David.

1). Ruth 4:21, 22 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.

2). Ruth 4:13-17 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.
And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.
And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

c. What a powerful lesson in the forgiveness and restoration of God, not only did God forgive Rahab but gave her a husband and placed them in the lineage of not only David, but also the Messiah! Wow!

Luke 3:23

Luke 3:23

And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

1.  “…the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli…”

a. “Joseph was clearly the son of Jacob (Matthew 1:16, so this verse [Luke 3:23 - says “son of Heli”] should be understood to mean “son-in-law of Heli.” Thus, the genealogy of Christ in Luke is actually the genealogy of Mary, while Matthew gives that of Joseph. Actually, the word “son” is not in the original, so it would be legitimate to supply either “son” or “son-in-law” in this context. Since Matthew and Luke clearly record much common material, it is certain that neither one could unknowingly incorporate such a flagrant apparent mistake as the wrong genealogy in his record. As it is, however, the two genealogies show that both parents were descendants of David—Joseph through Solomon (Matthew 1:7), thus inheriting the legal right to the throne of David, and Mary through Nathan (Luke 3:23-31), her line thus carrying the seed of David, since Solomon’s line had been refused the throne because of Jechoniah’s sin” [Dr. Henry M. Morris, The Defender’s Study Bible, note for Luke 3:23 (Iowa Falls, Iowa: World Publishing, Inc., 1995).].

Matthew 1:18

Matthew 1:18

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

a. NLT: This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.

b. NIV: This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

c. Amplified Bible: Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place under these circumstances: When His mother Mary had been promised in marriage to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be pregnant [through the power] of the Holy Spirit.

d. Worrell Translation: Now the birth of Jesus Christ was thus: His mother Mary having been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.

1. “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise…”

a. now [1161 * de] [Strong: a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:--also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).]

b. birth [1083 * genesis] [Strong: from 1080; nativity:--birth.]

c. Jesus [2424 * lesous] [Strong: of Hebrew origin (3091); Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other Israelites:--Jesus.]

d. Christ [5547 * Christos] [Strong: from 5548; anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus:--Christ.]

e. was [2258 * en] [Strong: imperfect of 1510; I (thou, etc.) was (wast or were):--+ agree, be, X have (+ charge of), hold, use, was(-t), were.]

f. on this wise [3779 * houto] [Strong: or (before a vowel houtos hoo'-toce adverb from 3778; in this way (referring to what precedes or follows):--after that, after (in) this manner, as, even (so), for all that, like(-wise), no more, on this fashion(-wise), so (in like manner), thus, what.]

2. “…When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together…”

a. when as [1063 * gar] [Strong: a primary particle; properly, assigning a reason (used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles):--and, as, because (that), but, even, for, indeed, no doubt, seeing, then, therefore, verily, what, why, yet.]

b. his [846 * auto] [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

c. mother [3384 * meter] [Strong: apparently a primary word; a "mother" (literally or figuratively, immediate or remote):--mother.]

d. Mary [3137 * Maria] [Strong: or Mariam mar-ee-am' of Hebrew origin (4813); Maria or Mariam (i.e. Mirjam), the name of six Christian females:-- Mary.]

e. espoused [3423 * mnesteuomai][Zodhiates: To ask in marriage, to woo. In the NT used only in the passive, meaning to be asked in marriage, to be bethrothed….The betrothal ceremony perpetuated in a conventional fashion the recollection of the time when a woman was purchased from her family, (Deuteronomy 20:7. When a woman was designated (Exodus 21:8, 9) by the head of her family as the future wife of another man, the prospective bridegroom paid a certain sum of money (or service as in the case of Jacob). A contract, which was inviolable, was then entered into (Genesis 34:12; Exodus 22:17). Until the time of the actual marriage, the brined to be remained in her own family. It was not permissible to betroth her to any other man except by action amounting to divorce, and any violation of the rights established by the betrothal was as serious as if the two persons had been ceremonially married Deuteronomy 22:23, 24)…separation of betrothed persons demanded a divorce, and there seems to have been no taboo in their living together as man and wife previous to the wedding ceremony. The children of such a union would be regarded as legitimate. Insofar as the virgin Mary and Joseph are concerned, the use of the verb “mnesteuomai”, indicates a betrothal ceremony. There is no mention, however, of a subsequent wedding ceremony. It was during this period of betrothal that the angel appeared to Mary (Matthew 1:18).]

f. Joseph [2501 * loseph] [Strong: of Hebrew origin (3130); Joseph, the name of seven Israelites:--Joseph.]

g. before [composed of two Greek words: prin & e][4250 * prin] [Strong: adverb from 4253; prior, sooner:--before (that), ere.] [2228 * e] [Strong: a primary particle of distinction between two connected terms; disjunctive, or; comparative, than:--and, but (either), (n-)either, except it be, (n-)or (else), rather, save, than, that, what, yea. Often used in connection with other particles.]

h. they [846 * autos] [Strong: from the particle au (perhaps akin to the base of 109 through the idea of a baffling wind) (backward); the reflexive pronoun self, used (alone or in the comparative 1438) of the third person , and (with the proper personal pronoun) of the other persons:--her, it(-self), one, the other, (mine) own, said, (self-), the) same, ((him-, my-, thy- )self, (your-)selves, she, that, their(-s), them(-selves), there(-at, - by, -in, -into, -of, -on, -with), they, (these) things, this (man), those, together, very, which.]

i. came together [4905 * synerchomai; sun-together with; erchomai-to come] [Strong: from 4862 and 2064; to convene, depart in company with, associate with, or (specially), cohabit (conjugally):--accompany, assemble (with), come (together), come (company, go) with, resort.

2. “…she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.”

a. found [2147 * heurisko][Thayer: to come upon, hit upon, to meet with, after searching, to find a thing sought, without previous search, to find (by chance), to fall in with, to find by enquiry, thought, examination, scrutiny, observation, to find out by practice and experience, to see, learn, discover, understand, to be found i.e. to be seen, be present, to be discovered, recognised, detected, to show one's self out, of one's character or state as found out by others (men, God, or both)]

b. with child [Three different Greek words] [1722 * en] [Thayer: a preposition, in, by, with, etc.] [1064 * gaster][Thayer: the belly, the womb, the stomach, a glutton, gormandiser, a man who is as it were all stomach.] [2192 * echo][Thayer: to have, i.e. to hold, possess, to be in such or such a condition…]

1). After the announcement to Mary of her pregnancy by the angel Gabriel, Mary went to visit her cousin Elisabeth. She stayed with her for three months, enough time for her to begin showing. It is probably at this time that Joseph found out. The circumstances were no doubt extremely uncomfortable for everyone in the family.
