Isaiah 6:10

Isaiah 6:10

Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

a. NLT: Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts
and turn to me for healing.”

1). Adam Clarke Commentary: Make the heart of this people fat "Gross" - The prophet speaks of the event, the fact as it would actually happen, not of God's purpose and act by his ministry. The prophets are in other places said to perform the thing which they only foretell: Jeremiah 1:10 "Lo! I have given thee a charge this day Over the nations, and over the kingdoms; To pluck up, and to pull down; To destroy, and to demolish; To build, and to plant." And Ezekiel says, "When I came to destroy the city," that is, as it is rendered in the margin of our version, "when I came to prophesy that the city should be destroyed;" Ezekiel 43:3. 

2). I have never heard the above explanation by Adam Clarke or anything similar to it. Hopefully in the near future I will study Ezekiel 43:3 and gain a better understanding.
Why the Hebrew translators correctly placed the responsibility on the people and the Christian/Gentile translators gave the impression that God bears the responsibility is troubling to me. Looking at the available translations and the Hebrew words I discovered that the English words “Make the” were inserted by translators and making the impression that God was the originator of their fattened heart. Looking at the Jewish translation and the Septuagint which is also a Jewish translation from Hebrew into the Greek, the blame for the condition of the people is squarely on them individually not on God. This is why when Jesus was reported in the Gospels citing this verse he quoted it differently, correctly placing the blame of their hearts on them and not on God.

c. Although a Hebrew word for the English word “not” is not in the Hebrew text, the translators Jewish and English put them in the text because the context required it. The senses of hearing and seeing in this verse are revealed in the next verse, Isaiah 6:10, to have failed to produce understanding and perception, therefore the negative “not” were inserted.

c. In looking at the passage in Isaiah it seems that God out of sovereign choice is the one making the people to not understand, because he says make their heart fat, make their ears heavy, and shut  their eyes. But Jesus clears it up by saying the people themselves caused their own inability to hear or see, through their own disobedience.

Isaiah 4:2

In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

a. NLT: But in that day, the branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious; the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of all who survive in Israel.

b. NIV: In that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of the survivors in Israel.

c. Amplified Bible: In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be excellent and lovely to those of Israel who have escaped.

Institute Of Creation Research Daily Devotional 1/2/14 One of the fascinating titles of the promised Messiah is that of “the Branch.” Here He is called “the Branch of the Lord,” along with “the fruit of the earth.” As the first, He is “beautiful and glorious.” As the second, He is “excellent and comely.” “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem [or ‘stump’] of Jesse [that is, the father of King David], and a Branch shall grow out of his roots” (Isaiah 11:1). In addition to the two references in Isaiah, there are two in Jeremiah and two in Zechariah. In both Jeremiah passages, He is a Branch of David. “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch” (Jeremiah 23:5). See also Jeremiah 33:15. In Zechariah’s prophecy, He is called God’s servant and God’s man. “For, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH” (Zechariah 3:8). “Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD” (Zechariah 6:12). f. Looking at the characteristics of the earth in the next sentence fragment we see the time period is the Millennial reign of Christ.

Isaiah 3:8

Isaiah 3:8

For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.

a. NLT: For Jerusalem will stumble, and Judah will fall, because they speak out against the LORD and refuse to obey him. They provoke him to his face.

b. NIV: Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.

c. Amplified Bible: For Jerusalem is ruined and Judah is fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of His glory and defy His glorious presence.

2. “…because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD…”

1). How are Jerusalem and Judah’s tongue’s “against the LORD”? It is revealed in the next verse. In Isaiah 3:9 it says, “they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not.” Looking at the Hebrew definition of “declare” tells us a lot.

a).  declare [5046 * nagad][Strongs: to front, i.e. stand boldly out opposite; by implication (causatively), to manifest; figuratively, to announce (always by word of mouth to one present); specifically, to expose, predict, explain, praise:--bewray, X certainly, certify, declare(-ing), denounce, expound, X fully, messenger, plainly, profess, rehearse, report, shew (forth), speak, X surely, tell, utter.]

2). The context of what they are declaring is sin so the various definitions fit right in with the NIV use of the word “parade”. To boldly stand out (in their sin) of homosexuality, to announce (their sin) of homosexuality by word of mouth, to proclaim (their sin) of homosexuality, to celebrate (their sin) of homosexuality with praise. We must remember also that the Hebrew shows their words are directed to God in rebellion.

3). Another thing they are declaring is revealed in Jeremiah 23:14, where it says, “they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness”. They are emboldening the evildoers that they do not repent. Ezekiel lived at the same period as Jeremiah and he sheds more light on it.

a). In contemporary culture one of the lies that “strengthen the hands of evil doers” and makes “the heart of the righteous sad” is the lie of sexual orientation. Homosexuality is a lust, it is not an orientation. See my note on Romans 1:26, 27.

1). They are declaring their sin to provoke God.

1). In the midst of their declaring their sin in rebellion toward and against God it is causing the failure and ruin of Jerusalem, the perishing and rotting of Judah. It is doing the same in American culture.

The carcases here are the bodies of men in eternal hell which will never be destroyed, bodies that will have been resurrected to immortality or deathlessness so that they may be punished for deeds  done in the body before death.

1). The phrase in this section of the verse is referring to eternal judgment of the ungodly. There are a number of passages in Scripture that echo this truth. In particular what Jesus said. I believe that Jesus was clearly citing this verse from Isaiah 66 when speaking on resisting temptation.

a). Mark 9:43:48 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
9:46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
9:47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
9:48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

2). Finis Jennings Dake: This refers to all men of all ages who have died in sin and will be sent to eternal hell where their worm will not die and the fire will not be quenched )Isaiah 66:24; Mark 9:43-49). It is clear here that the carcases and the worm are in a fire which shall never be quenched. They will be an abhorring to all the flesh living on the new earth. The purpose of this opening to hell will be to cause coming generations to abhor sin and its consequences. When natural men can actually see into eternal hell it will be a great warning to them to walk in the ways of God. Not only men of the new earth but also angels also, and all other beings will be able to look into this place and see how horrible the punishment can be (Revelation 14:9-11). Horrifying as the thought may be, the view may be God’s best method of keeping eternal generations in line with His laws and commandments as they progress in the new earth-in the eternity future.

3). Here are some other passages that speak of eternal judgment.

a). Isaiah 1:28-31 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed.
1:29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.
1:30 For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.
1:31 And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.

b). Revelation 14:9-11 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
14:11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

d. flesh [Strong: 1320 basar baw-sawr'; from 1319; flesh (from its freshness); by extension, body, person; also (by euphem.) the pudenda of a man:--body, (fat, lean) flesh(-ed), kin, (man-)kind, + nakedness, self, skin.]

1). One of the questions that has bothered believers is how can they be happy in heaven if they know loved ones are in hell. This is hard to answer on this side of it but I think we will be happy. For one thing we are going to know more about how our loving Father moved upon people to draw them to repentance and salvation and how they resisted. There is a passage in Ezekiel that I think may shed some light upon this truth.

a). Ezekiel 14:21-23 For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?
14:22 Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.
14:23 And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.
