Ephesians 5:20

Ephesians 5:20

Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

1. “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father…”

a. Giving thanks [Strong: 2168 eucharistéō, yoo-khar-is-teh'-o; from G2170; to be grateful, i.e. (actively) to express gratitude (towards); specially, to say grace at a meal:—(give) thank(-ful, -s).]

b. always [Strong: 3842 pántote, pan'-tot-eh; from G3956 and G3753; every when, i.e. at all times:—alway(-s), ever(-more).]

c. for [Strong: 5228 hypér, hoop-er'; a primary preposition; "over", i.e. (with the genitive case) of place, above, beyond, across, or causal, for the sake of, instead, regarding; with the accusative case superior to, more than:—(+ exceeding, abundantly) above, in (on) behalf of, beyond, by, + very chiefest, concerning, exceeding (above, -ly), for, + very highly, more (than), of, over, on the part of, for sake of, in stead, than, to(-ward), very.]

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

1. “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess…”

a. 1). This Greek word is only used three times in the New testament.

a). Luke 12:45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

c). 1 Thessalonians 5:7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

g. excess [Strong: 810 asōtía, as-o-tee'-ah; from a compound of G1 (as a negative particle) and a presumed derivative of G4982; properly, unsavedness, i.e. (by implication) profligacy:—excess, riot.] [Thayer:  (the character of an ἄσωτος, i. e. of an abandoned man, one that cannot be saved, from σαόω, σόω equivalent to σῴζω (ἄσωτος, Curtius, § 570); hence, properly, incorrigibleness), an abandoned, dissolute, life; profligacy, prodigality (R. V. riot]

1). The literal meaning of the word is very revealing. The Greek word is asōtía, a-nagative; and sozo-saved.

2. “…but be filled with the Spirit;”

a. but [Strong: 235 allá, al-lah'; neuter plural of G243; properly, other things, i.e. (adverbially) contrariwise (in many relations):—and, but (even), howbeit, indeed, nay, nevertheless, no, notwithstanding, save, therefore, yea, yet.]

b. be filled [Strong: 4137 plēróō, play-ro'-o; from G4134; to make replete, i.e. (literally) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow), or (figuratively) to furnish (or imbue, diffuse, influence), satisfy, execute (an office), finish (a period or task), verify (or coincide with a prediction), etc.:—accomplish, × after, (be) complete, end, expire, fill (up), fulfil, (be, make) full (come), fully preach, perfect, supply.]

Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

1. “Wherefore be ye not unwise…”

a. Wherefore [Strong: 1223  diá, dee-ah'; a primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal, or occasional):—after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) … fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, × though, through(-out), to, wherefore, with (-in).]

1). In a number of instances in the New Testament this word is translated “fool.”

2. “…but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”

1). To know and understand the will of the Lord we must be familiar with his word.

a). Matthew 7:21-27Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

1. “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

a. Redeeming [Strong: 1805 exagorázō, ex-ag-or-ad'-zo; from G1537 and G59; to buy up, i.e. ransom; figuratively, to rescue from loss (improve opportunity):—redeem.]

1). Institute Of Creation Research Daily Devotional 5/3/14: The Greek word for “redeem” means to “buy back,” to “ransom,” or even to “rescue.” That is, time is a very valuable asset, in danger of being lost forever unless it is rescued or redeemed. As a matter of fact, time is just about the most valuable asset we have. If we squander our money or lose our health, there is always the possibility of earning more money or being restored to health, but wasted time is gone forever. In our text, those who are wise redeem the time, whereas those who are fools waste or misuse it. HMM.

1). Walking in wisdom in front of those who don’t.

a). Colossians 4:5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.

d. because [Strong: 3754 hóti, hot'-ee; neuter of G3748 as conjunction; demonstrative, that (sometimes redundant); causative, because:—as concerning that, as though, because (that), for (that), how (that), (in) that, though, why.]

e. the [Strong: 3588 ho ho, including the feminine he hay, and the neuter to to in all their inflections; article; the (sometimes to be supplied, at others omitted, in English idiom):--the, this, that, one, he, she, it, the definite etc.]

f. days [Strong: 2250 hēméra, hay-mer'-ah; feminine (with G5610 implied) of a derivative of ἧμαι hēmai (to sit; akin to the base of G1476) meaning tame, i.e. gentle; day, i.e. (literally) the time space between dawn and dark, or the whole 24 hours (but several days were usually reckoned by the Jews as inclusive of the parts of both extremes); figuratively, a period (always defined more or less clearly by the context):—age, + alway, (mid-)day (by day, (-ly)), + for ever, judgment, (day) time, while, years.]

g. are [Strong: 1526 eisí, i-see'; 3rd person plural present indicative of G1510; they are:—agree, are, be, dure, × is, were.]

h. evil [Strong: 4190 ponērós, pon-ay-ros'; from a derivative of G4192; hurtful, i.e. evil (properly, in effect or influence, and thus differing from G2556, which refers rather to essential character, as well as from G4550, which indicates degeneracy from original virtue); figuratively, calamitous; also (passively) ill, i.e. diseased; but especially (morally) culpable, i.e. derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners:—bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked(-ness).]

1). One other time Paul classified days as evil.

a). Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
