a. ASV: So Moses the servant of Jehovah died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of Jehovah.

b. YLT: And Moses, servant of the Lord, dieth there, in the land of Moab, according to the command of Jehovah;

c. Amplified Bible Classic: So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord,

d. Septuagint: So Moses the servant of the Lord died in the land of Moab by the word of the Lord.

e. Stone Edition Torah/Prophets/Writings: So Moses, servant of HASHEM, died there, in the land of Moab, by the mouth of HASHEM.

1. “So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab…”

a. [So] Moses [Strong: 4872  Môsheh, mo-sheh'; from H4871; drawing out (of the water), i.e. rescued; Mosheh, the Israelite lawgiver:—Moses.]

b. [the] servant [Strong: 5650 ʻebed, eh'-bed; from H5647; a servant:—× bondage, bondman, (bond-) servant, (man-) servant.]

c. [of the] LORD [Strong: 3068 Yᵉhôvâh, yeh-ho-vaw'; from H1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jeho-vah, Jewish national name of God:—Jehovah, the Lord.]

d. died [Strong: 4191 mûwth, mooth; a primitive root; to die (literally or figuratively); causatively, to kill:—× at all, × crying, (be) dead (body, man, one), (put to, worthy of) death, destroy(-er), (cause to, be like to, must) die, kill, necro(-mancer), × must needs, slay, × surely, × very suddenly, × in (no) wise.]

e. there [Strong: 8033 sham shawm a primitive particle (rather from the relative pronoun, 834); there (transferring to time) then; often thither, or thence:--in it, + thence, there (-in, + of, + out), + thither, + whither.]

f. [in the] land [Strong: 776 ʼerets, eh'-rets; from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; the earth (at large, or partitively a land):—× common, country, earth, field, ground, land, × natins, way, + wilderness, world.]

g. [of] Moab [Strong: 4124 Môwʼâb, mo-awb; from a prolonged form of the prepositional prefix m- and H1; from (her [the mother's]) father; Moab, an incestuous son of Lot; also his territory and descendants:—Moab.]

1). Moses was forbidden to enter the land of Canaan because of his disobedience when he was told to speak to the rock but instead Moses struck the rock at Kadesh, in the desert of Zin (Numbers 20:1).

a). Numbers 20:7-13 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
20:8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
20:9 And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him.
20:10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
20:11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
20:12 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
20:13 This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.

b). To insert a time marker here, Miriam had just died (Numbers 20:1). Only Aaron, Moses, Joshua, Caleb and perhaps a few others are left of that generation. The forty years have almost passed so the incident of Exodus 17:1-7 occurred almost 40 years previous.

(1) Interestingly this is the same rock that Moses struck almost 40 years previous to this time. The Apostle Paul wrote by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that the rock travelled with Israel (1 Corinthians 10:4).

c). On this occurrence Moses was told to speak to the rock, but instead he struck the rock making it twice that he had struck the rock.

(1) Numbers 20:7-13 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
20:8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
20;13 This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.

d). And because of that disobedience Mose was not allowed in the land of Canaan.

(1) Deuteronomy 32:48-52 And the Lord spake unto Moses that selfsame day, saying,
32:49 Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:
32:50 And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:
32:51 Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of MeribahKadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.
32:52 Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.
